The module provides students with a systematic understanding of the most significant art historical developments in nineteenth-century Europe. It aims to facilitate analytic and interpretative skill using available documentation, and to educate students in the study of visual objects and material history. The module provides a close study of the most significant individual artists, and proceeds to look generally at the emergence of avant-garde movements. There is a theoretical component which provides the broader context for these developments.

Pre-requisite(s): Before taking this module you must pass AH1001 or pass AH1003

Learning and teaching methods and delivery

Weekly contact: 3 x 1-hour lectures and related contact time (x 10 weeks), 1 x 1-hour tutorial (x 10 weeks), 2 x office hour (x 10 weeks). Lectures will be delivered online and tutorials via Teams or in person when and where suitable conditions allow.

Assessment pattern

As used by St Andrews: 4000 words of assessment in total, consisting of the following pieces of assessments: Take-Home Midterm paper (35% 1500 words); Research Essay (55% 2500 words); and 5% class participation.
