From Senegal to Rwanda, the former colonial language of French is spoken in 26 countries on the African continent. One of the important legacies of French and Belgian colonisation in Africa has been the emergence of African francophone literature. However, the African writer's relationship with the French language is a conflictual one, bound up with a history of colonial oppression. This module introduces students to fiction in French by writers from sub-Saharan Africa from the 1950s to the twenty-first century. Through the study of a selection of novels by major African authors, students will develop knowledge and understanding of the contexts of production of francophone African literature and the impact of colonisation on African literature in French, alongside a sophisticated analytical grasp of the literary works themselves.
