This module will examine magic and related phenomena in the Greco-Roman world. Attention will be paid both to the fascination with magic in literature and to magical beliefs and practices in real life. The module will necessarily explore the problems of defining magic and differentiating it from religion or from other ritual practices, and will examine different ways that the problems have been tackled from antiquity to the present day. Students will study - in English translation - both literary texts and documentary and archaeological evidence.
