What imperial powers think they are doing and what they claim to do are issues that deserve just as much scrutiny as their conduct in practice. This module explores how the Roman elite conceived their imperial project - how they explained and justified Rome's conquest of the Mediterranean world and how they thought Roman power should be used. It also asks how literary and visual culture were complicit in legitimising and promoting the imperial project. Key topics include cosmocracy, peace and pacification, the civilising mission, ethnography and the idea of the barbarian. Discussion will proceed through close analysis of a wide range of texts and images.
